Read, seed, and write. That's the briefest description of how I use Newsvine. Here's what that means for me:
Read
I open Newsvine to Top News, scanning the Wire and the Vine. If something catches my attention, I go to the post. If not, I go to my Watchlist. The Watchlist is important to me because I do a lot of seeding. Seeing what others have posted about subject matter I want to seed helps prevent duplication.
Seed
After -- or, more likely, during -- scanning the Wire and Vine, checking my Watchlist and Google Alerts, I seed the Vine with informative posts about matters important to me.
Write
I haven't had time yet to engage in conversation, via comments. I have been using comments on my own h5n1, bird-flu pandemic posts, to include resource information, but have ceased doing so -- per Newsvine's email request -- because it gets picked up as spam. I'll get more creative next week.
My first blog posting was a thank-you to Amber MacArthur, whose interview with Mike Davidson and subsequent Newsvine Invite got me into this journalistic adventure.
I'll be writing several posts today in support of a presentation I'm giving at Berkman next Thursday: "So you're a citizen journalist? Prove it!" Or, How I practice citizen journalism on Newsvine. I'll include the outline for the presentation, too.
